Re: How many different "fermata" shells are possible?
An example of "fermata" shell number 33: "(2 intrecci) + (controbomba)".
These photos were taken in the Province of Bari on November 9th, 2011 preparing for the evening display of the Festival San Trifone on November 9th in the town of Adelfia.
This daylight display was fired by the company of Antonio Bruscella from Modugno in the Province of Bari.
This shell with the superscription "2* ___" written on the outside indicate "(2 intrecci) + (controbomba)".
The complete effect is 2 successive mosaic of color bombettes in the first break. In the first mosaic 4 color bombettes in pampanella and in the second mosaic 4 color bombettes in violet. In the second break a large bouquet with a heart of red and blue spherical stars and rings of red cylindrical stars.
There are 3 of this type of 16 cm caliber, 2-break shells in this evening display.
This "fermata" shell with the written superscription "2* ___", "2*" means "2 successive mosaic". "___" = "controbomba" = a large bouquet with a heart and rings.
Another detailed view of the "fermata" shell of 16 cm caliber.
This serie goes from the right to the left, three different effects in 3 shells of each effect. It starts with the effect "(scala a 8 stucchi) + (controbomba)", then "(2 intrecci) + (controbomba)" and "(4 botti + intreccio) + (controbomba)".
At the left side the three "fermata" shells with the superscription "4B * ___" = "(4 botti + intreccio) + (controbomba)".
Michele Bruscella is loading the shells of 14 cm caliber for the opening of the show.
You can translate this evening effect into a daylight effect: "(2 riprese) + controcolpo)".
I have chosen for an other video because the quality of Gecimali on the 9th of November 2011 is not so good. In this video it is the display during Easter 2017 in Lucca Sicula on Sicily by Luigi Di Matteo from Sant' Antimo in the Province of Napels. There is one more "controbomba", so the total effect is "(2 intrecci) + (controbomba) + (controbomba)".

An example of "fermata" shell number 97: "(scala a 8 botti) + controcolpo".
These photos were taken in the Province of Bari on November 9th, 2016 preparing for the daylight Festival San Trifone on November 10th in the town of Adelfia.
This daylight display was fired by the company of Giovanni Pannella from Ponte in the Province of Benevento. The Pannella company is very known and admired in Italy and abroad for their precisely timing, their shows are going like a "orologio svizzero", a "Swiss watch".
This shell with the superscription "9" written on the outside indicate "(scala a 8 botti) + controcolpo".
The complete effect is one break with eight successive salute bombettes and closed by a bottom-shot. A very good rhythm!!! In this serie of "fermata" shells we also see and hear a so called "progressione di scala a 8 botti". A very nice effect where the intensity of the "bombettes" becomes louder and louder.
There are 4 of this type of 16 cm caliber, one-break shells in this daylight display.
Sergio Pannella with the first "bomba di fermata" in this effect with the superscription "9" of 16 cm caliber. "9" = 8 successive salute bombettes + a bottom-shot.
Giovanni with the wheelbarrow filled with "scala a 8 botti" for the "progressione di 8 botti".
Giovanni with the wheelbarrow filled with 5 "scala a 8 botti" for the "progressione di 8 botti". We can read the superscription "8" on these fermata shells.
Giovanni Pannella loading the "fermata" shells in this effect.
Giovanni with the next "scala a 8 botti" for the "progressione".
Giovanni loading the "stutata" shell which is closing the "progressione di 8 botti".
You can translate this daylight effect into an evening effect: "(scala a 8 stucchi) + (controbomba)".

Re: How many different "fermata" shells are possible?
An example of the "fermata" shell number 150: "(intreccio + botto + intreccio + botto + intreccio) + (controbomba)".
These photos were taken in the Province of Salerno on August 17th, 2015 preparing for the competition with 4 companies in the town of Siano by the company of Giuseppe Catapano from Saviano in the Province of Napoli. Giuseppe Catapano was the winner of the edition in 2003 and 2014. Giuseppe was working for many years in the company of the brothers Pagano in Ottaviano (province of Napoli).
This shell with the superscription "X . X . X /" written on the outside indicate "(intreccio + botto + intreccio + botto + intreccio) + (controbomba)". The complete effect is in the first break 3 successive mosaic of color bombettes: 1. 4 color bombettes in gold. 2. 4 color bombettes with "pupatelle" in violet. 3. 4 color bombettes in "pampanella" (= white) and in between every mosaic a salute bombet.
In the second break a bouquet with a heart of purple spherical stars and rings of green cylindrical stars.
There are 3 of this type of 21 cm caliber, 2-break shells in this evening display.
A "classic" in the Italian serie of fermate of 21 cm caliber!!
When you translate this eveningfermata to a daylightshell it becomes: "(ripresa + botto + ripresa + botto + ripresa) + controcolpo".
At the left side Giuseppe Catapano with a "fermata" shell of 21 cm caliber in this effect "X . X . X /". "X" = intreccio. "." = botto al titanio. "/" = controbomba.
An employee of Catapano loading a "fermata" shell in the effect "(controbomba) + (intreccio) + (controbomba)".
Ciro Scudo loading a fermata shell of 21 cm caliber in 3 breaks. The superscription is "O O O", so the effect is "(controbomba) + (controbomba) + (controbomba)". The father of Ciro is Giuseppe and he is the developer of the famous "bomba regina". At the other side of the road the mortars from the serie fermate of Giuseppe Catapano.
This serie consists of:
4.36 - 4.58 min.: 3 shells "(intreccio + botto + intreccio + botto + intreccio) + (controbomba)".
4.59 - 5.19 min.: 3 shells "(3 intrecci) + (controbomba)".
5.20 - 5:29 min.: 1 shell "(3 intrecci) + (3 intrecci)".
5:30 - 5:33 min.: 1 shell "(controbomba) + (intreccio) + (controbomba)".
5:34 - 5:42 min.: 1 shell "(3 intrecci) + (3 intrecci)".

An example of the "fermata" shell number 601: "scala a (2 intrecci) + (2 intrecci) + (2 intrecci) + (2 intrecci)".
This "fermata" shell was fired during the competition in the town Parete (province Caserta) by Carmine Ruocco at the 6th of April 2024. I regret that I wasn't there to make pictures during the set-up and to watch this fantastic shell during the evening. Carmine won the first price for the best display ("Miglior spettacolo" in the Italian language) and the first price for the best opening shell ("bomba da tiro" in the Italian language) and the best serie fermate ("Miglior finale" in the Italian language).
In the first mosaic 7 bombettes in the colour pampanella (white) and 7 bombettes in the colour green. In the second mosaic 7 bombettes in the colour pampanella (white) and 7 bombettes in the colour green.
